Most artist documentaries look back—after fame has crystallized or a life has ended. RIBAL – The Art of Becoming turns the timeline inside out. Since 2020, the camera has stayed close to painter and classical violinist Ribal Molaeb (early thirties), tracing a path from Mount Lebanon and Beirut via Vienna to Zurich, and outward to Antibes, the UAE (Abu Dhabi/Dubai), Tokyo/Fukuoka, and New York. The series is built on contrasts: two art forms (painting and music), two cultural spheres (European and Arab), and two working tempos—the contemplative solitude of the studio and the performative urgency of the stage.
The narrative combines observational scenes, guided conversations with family, musicians, gallerists, collectors, and experts, voice‑over reflections, and professionally recorded archive spanning exhibitions and concerts of the last years. Studio recordings of finished paintings anchor each episode; here, Ribal speaks about motifs, materiality, and the elusive moment when a work “clicks.” Recurring motifs include the expectations shaped by a renowned father, the daily economics of practice (studio space, materials, logistics, travel), the pressure to position oneself (nationally, internationally, commercially, authentically), and the oscillation between self‑doubt and assertion.
Since 2023, Ribal’s works have been traded at major auction houses—a milestone that validates, accelerates, and complicates his trajectory. Season 1 follows this turning point across continents, while staying grounded in the atelier where the next series of works emerges. The guiding question remains simple yet generative: What does it take to establish yourself as an artist? The answer is not offered as a formula but as a lived, longitudinal process. The project is conceived as multi‑season, allowing the story to continue beyond Season 1.
